A beautiful crisp Autumn morning for quite a cracker of a game.

We started brightly enough and within the first couple of minutes we were through on goal. Jamie forced a quick save from the keeper, who couldn’t hold on to the shot, and Jamie followed up with an exquisite chip to open the scoring. We had at least 2 other really good opportunities to extend our lead but the finishing wasn’t up to scratch. We continued to press, but there were occasional chances for Holywood too. It took a very smart half-volley finish from Ethan after a corner from the right in the 26th minute to settle our nerves and we started to play some fantastic attacking moves, having got the 2 goal cushion. Just before half-time we were 3 in front thanks to the strength and amazing pace of Tony who set up Declan for a well deserved goal. At the other end, Finn and Michael were solid in defence for us and the Holywood forwards rarely got a sight of goal. 3-0 to Carryduff at half-time.

Tony then scored himself within 90 seconds of the re-start to really emphasise the dominance of our team today, and only 5 minutes later Declan had added another, with a most stunning assist from Man-of-the-match Max, as he scooped a ball over the Holywood defence onto a perfectly timed run from Declan who finished with style. Holywood got a goal back though, as the Carryduff team pushed to find more goals and were caught out on the break (a little bit of naievity to discuss in training). Jack, deputising, due to not having our regular keeper, was unlucky not to keep a clean sheet, and indeed his performance as stand-in keeper was worthy of praise as he commanded his area excellently throughout the match (he was given a round of applause by his teammates in the changing room after the match for his fantastic and confident performance).

We weren’t going to finish on a low note though, and we had several more chances to further extend the lead… Niall almost scoring a header from a corner, then Conor looping a ball over the defence for Seb to nod another header only inches wide at the back post, before he finally drilled home our sixth to add to the 2 goals he scored last week.

We’ve played this Holywood team at least 6 times previously and somehow never managed to perform to the level we should, and never even managed a draw against them, but finally we broke that hoodoo in very convincing style and hopefully this will boost our confidence for the season ahead. Currently top of the league after 3 matches unbeaten.. let’s hope we can continue as we’ve started.
