Seniors hoping to make 2017 the big one

Carryduff Colts first team reached the end of the calendar year in fine fettle – sitting second in the league, reached the last 32 of the prestigious Junior Shield and with the Harry Clarke Cup still to come.

In the league, the team have played 10 games, winning six, drawing three and losing just one. That sole defeat was against Newcastle Swifts but they more than made up for that when they trounced the highly fancied Mournemen 4-0 at Lough Moss in the last game before Christmas.

Having drawn the first two games league and lost the third one, Carryduff have won six of their last seven league games and won the last five. They now sit five points behind Ballyvea but still have to play them twice, while other teams who can catch them with games in hand are Annalong Swifts, who they also have to play twice, and Celtic Bhoys who they beat 4-3 at home a fortnight ago.

Colts have the best goal difference of any time in the league with plus 27. With an average scoring record of over four goals per game – having scored 43 goals in 10 games – only Downpatrick Athletic have scored more often and they have played three games more. The senior games are proving to be really attractive and exciting and this has been reflected in increasing number of spectators coming along to watch the games on Saturday afternoons.

And the promising thing for the rest of the season is that the goals are being shared around. Stevie Doherty has been on fire having scored in each of the last seven games he has played in and he currently stands on 12 in total, with eight in the league and four in the cup. Darragh Brownlee is next with 10 goals (seven in the league) and he has scored in his last three games while Calum McSorley has netted six times, all in the league.

The firsts’ next game is in the first round of the Harry Clarke Cup at home to Rossglass County at Lough Moss on 7 January. Victory will take them into the last 16 of the competition and would be a foolish person to bet against the Colts against anyone in current form.
